For decades, Japanese percussionist Hirokazu Asakura โ better known as ASA-CHANG โ has been a pioneer of rhythmic experimentation. As the founder of Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, he played a key role in revolutionizing Japanโs ska scene. But it is with ASA-CHANG & Junray that he has truly explored the boundary between tradition and avant-garde.
The project was founded in 1997 alongside programmer Hidehiko Urayama and later joined by tabla virtuoso U-zhaan. Together, they have crafted a sonic universe where Japanese vocal fragments, Indian-inspired rhythms, and electronic experimentation merge into a playful yet boundary-pushing sound. Their music is built on deconstructed melodies and layered percussion patterns, with the voice treated as an instrument in itself โ an approach that has caught the attention of John Peel, The Wire, and Mojo Magazine.
ASA-CHANG & Junray have composed music for contemporary dance companies, created soundtracks for anime productions, and performed worldwide. Now, with their latest live lineup, they return to the stage with a performance as uncompromising, inventive, and pulsating as ever.
