With I Saw the Devil Nicholas Grafia invites to an audiovisual evening at Kunsthal Aarhus, consisting of spoken word performance and choreography, as a form of public meditation on the life of French entertainer and civil rights activist Josephine Baker, often named “Black Venus”. The performative chapter presented first at Kunsthal Aarhus marks the artist’s ongoing negotiation and visual investigation of subversive historical personalities, ambiguous cultural narratives and their political potentials and implications for society at large.

Planned as the beginning of a new series of performances and installations, the piece will find its continuation next in Berlin, extended in its form, in January 2020.
