Gertrud Sandqvist is professor in the theory and history of ideas of visual art at Malmö Art Academy, Lund University, Sweden, and Rector (1995-2007, 2011-).
Sandqvist was a board member of the National Foundation for Swedish Culture of the Future 2003- 2012, and chair of Baltic Art Center 2003- 2008. 2007- 2010 she was chairing the steering committee of KUNO, the network organization of all Nordic Art Academies. She is a member of the International board of Maumaus-escola des artes Visuales, Lisbon. 2007-2008 she was a member of the curriculum committee of the International Academy of Art Palestine. She is a regular visiting professor at HISK in Ghent.
She is one of the founding members of EARN, European Art Research Network.
1992-1994 she was director of Galleri F 15, Norway. She founded siksi the Nordic art magazine in 1986 and was its editor until 1990. She was a member of the jury of DAAD- Berliner Künstlerprogramm 1998-2002, and Carnegie Art Award 2001-2004
She received the Lund university award for eminent pedagogical merits in 2001.
Professor Sandqvist is writing extensively on mainly Nordic and European contemporary art. 2010 she was the co-curator of the Moderna utställningen at Moderna Museet, Stockholm. She co-curated, together with Sarat Maharaj, Dorothee Albrecht and Stina Edblom The Gothenburg International biennial of Contemporary Art 2011. She curated Channeled, a show with contemporary artists and Hilma af Klint at Lunds Konsthall, Sweden, 2013, and Against Method for Generali Foundation, Vienna, 2013. Currently she is researching Swedish visionary artist Hilma af Klint.
